9th Dixie Jazz Fest at Dixie Jazz Fest at Summer Theater
During the 9th Dixie Jazz Fest the citizens and guests of Veliko Turnovo can experience interesting international collaborations, Dixieland and reggae music bands.
A band consisting of the famous saxophonist Oleg Kireyev (Russia), bass player Branko Markovic (Serbia) and two other musicians will play world class jazz during the Dixies Jazz Fest in the Summer Theater.
Kireyev was a pioneer in world music and ethno jazz in Russia in 2008 and he was nominated for a Grammy award for his album Mandala. He has performed on the biggest festival stages in Switzerland, UK, US, Serbia and Poland. His new album, The Meeting, was released on May 31 2016 and was created in collaboration with Tom Harrell (trumpet), Keith Javors (piano), Ben Williams (bass) and E.J. Strickland (drums).
The people of Veliko Turnovo remember Branko Markovic from the 7th Dixie Jazz Fest when he performed with Kochetov Quintet (Serbia). For two decades he has been a bass soloist of the Big Band of Radio and Television of Serbia (RTS) and since 1980 he has been a member of various Serbian jazz bands. He is the co-founder and the artistic director of the "North City Jazz & Blues Festival" in Kosovska Mitrovica and "White Field Jazz Festival" in Bijelo Polje (Montenegro). During his career, he has played together with Chet Baker, Larry Koru, Horace Parley, Jori Vito Benny Golson, Eddie Henderson, Randy Brecker and Michael Brecker.
Oleg Kireyev and Branko Markovic quartet is completed by Milovan Paunovic (piano) and Luka Jovicic (drums).
The pianist and composer Federica Colangelo (Italy) and her band are among the other international guest performers at the festival. Federica has vast experience as a musician - she has been composing music for classical bands and she has arranged and played jazz standards. Her music combines essential elements of both musical worlds. Acquaphonica is her own project and her first album is called "Private Enemy". The album has been reviewed by one of the most prestigious jazz magazines in Italy and the Netherlands.
